Had a rough start this morning. Jake fell down on the way to the school bus. It was foggy and icy. He doesn't have many reflexes, so it was a hard fall. Got a few bumps and bruises. Even tonight he's limping around. I feel awful for him. He's a tough kid and fearless most days - yet that's been tested.
One thing definitely on my mind - the importance of quality information being shared between caregivers. Not saying anything like this happened today but it has in the past.
Emotional continuity. What is it and why is it important?
Today is a great example for me to explain the complex nature of hysterics and my world because it ties into why I am disgusted/tired of the media. It's pretty much the same. Same factors at play.
It's like a game of telephone - those around Jake (he's nonverbal) - believe they can speak on his behalf. Projecting all kinds of ridiculous theories and fictional events onto any given moment. Yet I have my own system of communication with him. It's fairly easy for me to analyze and read his moods. It's that way for most parents but I have to admit I live an unstructured chaotic way of life compared to most and I've been highly present in their life. I raised them directly as a stay at home parent - I'm also a behavior therapist who works with nonverbal children.
I pretty much could walk into any situation and figure out what is going on and provide guidance, attempt to resolve it. I absolutely love that kind of process challenge. One thing is for certain, there's always the factor of being wrong - it's a continuous self improvement process and a very humbling career choice. Miscommunication happens often, even among professionals. Someone needs an extraordinary amount of cool, calm collect - especially in behavior hot zones.
So when someone claims fantastical nonsense? It's hard to describe how fast I turn to evidence based logic. Honed instincts outweighs bullshit. Easily.
With my background and training, (raising two medically vulnerable kids) - I can do this process very quickly. Others might need to track things down in order to untangle and understand the moment. That process is dependent on reading vibes and emotional continuity. This is not possible on SM.
I'm going to repeat this because it's important to understand: reading nonverbal is not possible on SM. This should be obvious but yet isn't. As such, no need to despair over media. Frustrating? Yes. Not just from the annoyance factor but also how it sabotages advocacy and imagination.
However there are ways to increase your own personal effectiveness when crafting communication. It's possible to put nonverbal cues and symbolism into writing without involving hysterics. Traditional media and editors? Know not of this process. Most are reactionaries themselves. In addition, they're not leaders.
Behavior therapists love setting an example. Incompetence talks, talent walks.
